The Pomeranian is brave, but rarely foolhardy. It will bristle and make its presence known to strangers or potential enemies. The Pomeranian's actions are such that it stays just out of harm's way while actively making its displeasure abundantly and vocally clear. Normally a friendly and happy dog, the Pomeranian will make friends on its own terms and only after it is sure of one's intentions. Because of its intelligence and its high activity level, the Pomeranian needs to have its brightness and energy channeled into appropriate behaviors.
With some simple, consistent training, the Pom can become an excellent watchdog, discerning unusual sound from the ordinary. The genetic capacity that has made the Pomeranian a good obedience trial dog. It also makes it a faithful protector of its domain.
No dog is more devoted to its owner than the Pomeranian. The breed's adaptability allows the Pom to fit into life in an apartment, a suburban duplex, or a rural home. Although constraints must be placed on very young children-as they must with any of the toy breeds-the Pomeranian can become an excellent child's pet as well as an incomparable companion for an older person. Given the almost uncanny ability of these little dogs to pick up on certain clues and learn quickly what is expected of them, there are few breeds that can boast an overall better record of satisfied owners than the Pomeranian. As has been mentioned, this loyalty is amply demonstrated by the number of people who, after having owned a Pom, stay with the breed enthusiastically.
