Giant Schnauzers:
To better understand the nature of the Schnauzer you must know their background. They were first bred in
the rural arias of southern Germany with the aim to be stable dog, pig herder,
rat catchers, cattle drover and children’s playmate. They were use to play a
useful role in every aspect of life in the countryside. Most of these jobs were
executed in summer as well as winter, on sunny, rainy, snowy, or freezing days:
that one moment the schnauzer enjoyed the coziness of the fireplace in the
living room—the next moment—joyful trotting in a miserable rain. From this background, we
may conclude that the main characteristics of the Schnauzers nature are
happiness, determination, and loyalty. He is a happy dog, because he enjoys all
that he does, because he only does what he enjoys. They enjoy playing games.
Today they are more of a companion. In all honesty, I must
conclude that the Schnauzer is a fantastic dog but do not expect to program him
like a computer or expect him to be a slave. He will only give you his
true heart and soul, if he finds you worthy. A Schnauzer is devoted
to his owner and family. At first he will show suspicion towards strangers, but
when they show their good intentions, he will accept them. High spirited,
reliable companion dog, easy to train, needs lots of exercise or a big yard.
When an opponent threatens,
he will fight. Schnauzers will grow up with other dogs, and the hierarchy
of the pack will be established (usually the schnauzer ends up to be the
leader). His height to length
ratio makes him almost square. He has a long head with arched, bushy
eyebrows, giving him an alert, intelligent expression. He loves water, either to
swim or play in. His smart looking coat is
harsh, with an undercoat. Need some stripping or trimming to look neat,
otherwise easily groomed (loves to be brushed) Once seen a Schnauzer you will
never forget him, he makes a lasting impression. Estelle and Elridge
