WORK DESCRIPTION
Temporary TRAINEE GENERAL ASSISTANT, male or female.

Requirements
Fluency in English.
Willingness to work outdoors in all weathers and to get hands dirty.
Strength to shift 25kg bags of dog food.
This job requires dedication to animals who rely on us to be there for them.
A love of animals – dogs, cats,
parrots, etc, is most important.
Animals can be very intelligent & difficult, so it is important that
assistants are alert, firm, and even-tempered.
The aim of the kennel
Pets’ Place Boarding Kennels looks
after pets while their owners are away. The aim of the kennels is to provide a
happy, clean environment for the pets.
Duties
Assistants must be willing to help
with all aspects of pet-care and with keeping the place tidy and presentable at
all times.
Assistants must be fit &
willing to do sweeping, mopping, gardening, digging. They may be asked to use
power tools, or a hammer, depending on what needs fixed. (tuition given)
Each pet, or family of pets, has its own
kennel, which has to be kept clean, and the pets take turns of playing in the
garden, which also has to be kept clean and presentable, with grass cut to a hygienic
short length. Catnip plants to be watered and
grass in cattery to be trimmed.
Empty feeding bowls and water bowls
are collected and washed thoroughly. Chewed dishes or toys to be reported & removed!
When a pet leaves to go home, the
blankets are washed and mended. The kennel is cleaned – walls and floor hosed
down. Floor disinfected.
We stroke, caress and comfort the pets as often as possible. Often pets are brushed or bathed before going home.
Cat litter trays are to be emptied,
washed, disinfected, and refilled every day. Because of the risk of
toxoplasmosis, and the heavy work, pregnant women may not work in the
kennels.
Kennels need to be painted regularly.
The flat, office and customer’s toilet is
to be kept clean & tidy.
Assistants should be willing to do
lowly, menial tasks for the sake of the animals.
There are no servants at Pets’ Place. We are all here to serve the animals!
Staff must be willing to help with all
of the above WITH A SMILE! Pets pick up the vibes of humans, so an unhappy
worker makes an unhappy pet!
Where is it?
The kennels are in a country setting
at Salem, halfway between Grahamstown and Kenton-on-sea. There is no public
transport. Cell phone reception is OK for Cel C & Vodacom only.
Flat
Dogs often sleep in the flat.
Assistants and all workers use the shared flat at
tea & lunch breaks. The flat must be kept clean and tidy. The flat is only for folk who work at the
kennels - no friends, kids, pets. No alcohol, or any drugs, allowed on the
premises.

Can you do lowly work? Can you be a servant to an animal? Can you pick up dog poo with a smile? To paraphrase the Bible, "Assistants, obey your employer in all things, not with eye service as men pleasers, but in singleness of heart, pleasing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily and cheerfully, as to the Lord, and not as to men, knowing that you will receive a reward from God."
Colossians chapter 3, verse22
