June 2024. The world's tallest dog has died. It was a three year old overgrown Great Dane from West Des Moines, Iowa, USA. Large breeds don't have a long life span but his life was shortened prematurely by an illness that caused his death. Officially, the tallest breed is the Irish Wolfhound. A dog's height is measured at the withers. A wolfhound's height at the withers must be not less than 82 cm. It's a large breed! WHAT ARE "WITHERS"? To measure your dog's height at the withers, you can follow these steps :
Stand your dog against a wall or door frame.
Feel for the dog's withers, which is the highest point where the dog's shoulder and neck meet.
Place a level across your dog's withers.
Measure from the ground to your level mark.
Record the measurement for future reference. That's your dog's height.

Bloemfontein, June. A woman has been mauled to death by 4 pitbulls. 3 of the dogs were euthanased on the spot. The 4th dog had puppies so was taken to the SPCA. The owner - the deceased's boyfriend - may face a charge of culpable homicide.
In May, an SPCA staff member was attacked by three pitbulls that she was trying to remove from the property after a complaint. The owner picked up a plank and that triggered aggression in the dogs, who latched on to her legs. She escaped alive.
Folks, we animal-lovers think that every dog loves us, but we don't know what a dog is thinking at times. Let's always be alert when we see a strange dog. Anything can trigger aggression, especially if the owner is near.
Should pitbulls be banned? Some folk say that you mustn't ban a whole breed because some dogs are bad. What's your opinion?

CANINE LIFE-GUARDS
In some countries, dogs like Golden Retrievers, Labradors, & Newfoundlands have been trained to swim out to sea to rescue humans who are drowning. The dogs wear a harness which the swimmer can grab, or they haul a buoy which the swimmer can hold on to and be dragged to safety. They can also be trained to patrol the beach alerting human life-guards to people who are swimming outside the demarcated safety zone. The training takes 3 years. Funds are always needed! In SA, the first Canine Life-guard was Lyric, a Labrador trained by the SA Guide Dogs Assoc. He worked in Nelson Mandela Bay. If you see an ad for puppies, do a video call in real time before you pay. You need to see the puppies and breeder same time. If the seller makes excuses, it's probably a scam.

WORM OF THE MONTH – WHIPWORM
Whipworms live in the large intestines. If your dog is losing weight, or has diarrhoea, it could have worms. Your vet will give you medicine to clear up the condition. A second dose should be given after 3 months. The worm eggs pass out the body in the dog poo. Some dogs eat dog poo, and worms are spread from dog to dog. Always pick up the poo as quick as you can, and always take plastic bags with you to pick up your dog’s poo when out for a walk.

HOW TO PICK UP DOG POO IN A PUBLIC PLACE
Firstly, don't be embarrassed! You are a star! You are showing a good example to others. Dogs are often banned from public places like beaches and parks because their owners don't clean up after them. No one likes standing in poo! To pick it up, you can use a bread wrapper. Put your hand in the plastic bag like it's a glove, scoop up the poo then turn the bag inside-out, tie it, dump it in a bin, and give yourself a pat on the back!
